Test you Baltimore knowledge. Do you know where this is? This picture of the Lexington Market was taken betwen 1850 and 1900. The market has actually been in it's current location since 1782. Do you know how the market got its name? General John Eager Howard, a hero of the Revolutionary War, donated the land on his return from the war and named the market after the Battle of Lexington. The market opened at dawn so farmers would spend all night making the long trip to the market. In 1949, a six alarm fire destroyed the market and all the merchdise. The current building was put up in it's place. More than 230 years later, the market is still the place to go in Baltimore for a little bit of everything. | |||||||||||||
