Gibson's Grant Manor House

The Manor House at Gibson Grant is one of the largest surviving 18th century homes on Kent Island.  The land can be traced back to the mid 17th century when John Gibson and Henry Stoope patented 150 acres on Kent Island.  In 1730, Francis Bright had Stoopley-Gibson resurveyed for 200 acres. This is a copy of the survey from the Maryland Archives.

The Manor house first shows up in tax records in 1798. Bright is listed as the owner of 176 acres with a house, barn and corn house valued at $600. The home was originally a 2 or 2 ½ story home. Its driveway ran all the way to Route 18 east of Chester.

In the19th century, the home was expanded to its current 3 stories. A two story frame addition was also added at this time along with a one story porch on the south façade. In 1930, the house was renovated and the frame wing was replaced with the current west wing.

The manor house is now the focal point for the Gibson’s Grant neighborhood. It is looking for a new owner. The home is currently listed for sale by Keller Williams Select Realtors.
