#Snow in April?

#Snow in April
By Michelle Doell

It's April and if you are like me you are ready for that spring time weather. The night time freeze warning has me wondering where spring went. Colder weather in the DC area is not unusual. Check out these photos of the record breaking April Fools Day Storm I found at the Library of Congress.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm dumped 4 plus inches in DC and 9 inches in Baltimore. While April 1st seems late for snow, the latest snow seen in DC?  A trace of snow fell on May 10, 1906.

Building of #Jefferson Memorial

Building of Jefferson Memorial
by Michelle Doell

Spring has sprung in DC and the #Cherry Blossoms have taken center stage.

The blossoms are the perfect frame for my favorite memorial in DC, the Jefferson Memorial. That might not have been the case if John Russell Pope's original design for the memorial had been built. His plan called for a series of reflecting pools, rectangular terraces and a formal row of trees. The design was controversial because people worried about the fate of the famous cherry trees. The design changed after Pope's death and his colleagues Otto Eggers and David Higgins took over. In 1938, Congress approved the 3 million dollars to start construction.

November 15, 1939, President Franklin D Roosevelt was on hand when the Cornerstone was laid at the memorial. The Library of Congress photo shows the President holding a trowel handed down through the generations since George Washington. Several years later on 200 anniversary of Jefferson's birth, Roosevelt dedicated the completed memorial. This picture from the Library of Congress shows the marines guarding the statue during the dedication.
The final price tag on the memorial was 13 million dollars.

#Annapolis Waterfront Town Houses

Waterfront Townhomes in Annapolis

Looking for a waterfront home without the maintenance of a house? A town house could be the answer and self proclaimed sailing capitol of the world has a lot to choose from.

Chesapeake Harbour is a mixture of garden style apartments and townhomes located at the mouth of the Severn River.  The gated community has 2 pools, tennis courts, walking paths, private beach and marina. It was built in the 80’s on the site of Carr’s and Sparrow beach. The beach was a renowned summer resort and music venue. Greats like Fats Domino, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder performed there.
Chesapeake Harbour is divided into four villages that surround the marina. The first Village has 244 garden and loft condos. The Second village is also garden and loft condos. 45 garage duplex town homes make up the Harbour Marina Village. While 67 four level garage and beach front townhomes make up the Townhome Village. Your HOA and Condo fees depend on which village you live in

If you want to have a workshop but are looking for a townhome on the water, Dreams Landing may be the place for you. The community has a workshop complete with everything you need to work on a project. For a monthly fee owners can use the facility. The community has the normal waterfront amenities including a fitness club, pool and marina.

Want to be in the middle of it all in downtown Annapolis and be on the water? Market Quay may be right for you. The community boosts a water front pool and deep water slips. The HOA fee for this community is one of the most expensive in Annapolis though.  But worth if it you want the downtown Annapolis lifestyle.

Covering the President

Covering the President
by Michelle Doell

President Obama is in Michigan today

and that means the national press corps are with him.

The press has followed Presidents for years. Back in 1935, President Roosevelt visited Annapolis. His arrival was in a car not Air Force One.

The cadets lined up to greet him
Notice the camera on platforms in the background? And check out this photo from the Library of Congress on the cameras on a boat.

According to the schedule on the FDR Library, President Roosevelt was in town for the Boat Races. He was joined by Mr and Mrs James Roosevelt, Secretary and Mrs. Rexford Tugwell, Mrs. Donner Roosevelt, and others.
