#Opening Day

For thousands of baseball fans, an opening day ticket is the golden ticket, the one they have been waiting all winter for.

Back in 1936, President Roosevelt was presented with a golden pass for baseball.

This picture from the Library of Congress shows Roosevelt getting the pass from Clark Griffin, President of the Washington Club. Looking on with interest is 8 year old Sandy McDonald, 8 year old son of Washington Sports announcer. Mrs. Roosevelt's pass is in the bag Griffin is holding. The golden ticket below is from 1935.

President Roosevelt was a big supporter of baseball. After Pearl Harbor was attacked, the Baseball Commissioner was worried about proceeding with the season during war. President Roosevelt wrote what is called the "Green Light Letter" giving baseball the green light to proceed during war.
"Baseball has been called the national pastime and rightly so because it stands for the fair play, clean living and good sportsmanship which are our national heritage. That is why it has
such a warm place in our hearts."

Two Days and Counting...Until #Openingday

Two Days and Counting

Courtesy of Library of Congress

In my search for baseball photos, I ran across this one of Babe Ruth sliding into 3rd base. Ossie Bluege is waiting for him on base. Everyone knows who Babe Ruth is but you may not know the player on third. Ossie Bluege was chiefly known for his defensive skills. He led the American League third basemen in double plays for three different seasons. Bluege played his entire career with the Washington Senators.

3 Days and Counting...Until #OpeningDay

3 Days and Counting...Until #OpeningDay

The Baltimore Orioles were members of the International League in 1921. The birds had a 27 game winning streak that year, tying the existing record. The team ended the season with a 119-47 record. They led the league in batting average, runs, hits and home runs. They also set the league attendance records drawing 308,970 fans that season.  Some teams today draw nearly 10 times that many fans!

The Orioles should have the stands full on March31st in the home opener against the Red Sox.

4 Days and Counting Until Opening Day

Four days and counting until opening day.

This photo shows the Washington Senators lining the field during opening day in 1971. It was the last season the ball club would play in RFK and in Washington. For the second time, the Senators packed up and left town. The club moved to the Lone Star State and became the Texas Rangers.  The National Capitol waited 34 years for a team to come back to town. This year you are going to have to wait for the Nationals home opener. The team is on the road against the Mets on opening day.

Online Listings

Online Listings

They say you can’t put lipstick on a pig but there are a lot of houses on the market where there pictures online are doing just that. I am not saying they have gone the way of Kim Kardashian and have been over photoshopped. I am just saying when it comes to homes, a picture doesn’t always tell the whole story.

When I moved to Calvert County, there was a waterfront home I fell in love with. Yes it was only on the internet and we never met in person but I knew this home was my dream house. It was wonderful in the pictures. I could see me lounging on the waterfront deck, sitting by the fire or cooking in the large kitchen.

When I finally got the chance to see it I was devastated. I had built this home up in my mind as my dream house but it was a nightmare. Peeling wood and paint, a garden overgrown with weeds and the smell of mold was not the image I got looking at the listing online. The pictures online must have been taken in the home’s prime… but it is well past that point now. When I tell other people they look at me like I have three heads. They can’t believe it because they can see the home online. It’s not until they walk in that they see what I am talking about.

While looking for a home on the internet is easy with all the new websites, it can also lead to big disappointments. It can also make you miss some great homes out there by disqualifying them when you only see them online.

The area I live in has a lot of great small neighborhoods with private beaches. Houses in these neighborhoods have been in families for years and maybe only one or two come on the market a year. If you live out of the area, you wouldn’t know that the Willows is a great neighborhood with a great beach. It’s the perfect vacation get away. Because a lot of the homes are older and don’t photograph as well, people will dismiss them and pass on fantastic property!

Let’s face it, I became a real estate agent because I want to help people and I love looking at houses. Chances are I have seen every house on the market in my area and can give you insights into those homes.  So please don’t be afraid to ask! To steal a cliché, when it comes to online home searches, I urge you to “never judge a book by its cover”!   See it in person and then form your own opinion.

Standing Room Only for Baseball

Just 5 days and counting until opening day. While Camden Yards may be packed with fans, I doubt it would ever look like this.

As you can see, baseball fans are every where. They are even standing in the outfield and sitting on the fence. This picture was taken in 1897 when Baltimore took on Boston.

This year, the Orioles will open against the Red Sox on March 31st.

Gibson's Grant Manor House

The Manor House at Gibson Grant is one of the largest surviving 18th century homes on Kent Island.  The land can be traced back to the mid 17th century when John Gibson and Henry Stoope patented 150 acres on Kent Island.  In 1730, Francis Bright had Stoopley-Gibson resurveyed for 200 acres. This is a copy of the survey from the Maryland Archives.

The Manor house first shows up in tax records in 1798. Bright is listed as the owner of 176 acres with a house, barn and corn house valued at $600. The home was originally a 2 or 2 ½ story home. Its driveway ran all the way to Route 18 east of Chester.

In the19th century, the home was expanded to its current 3 stories. A two story frame addition was also added at this time along with a one story porch on the south façade. In 1930, the house was renovated and the frame wing was replaced with the current west wing.

The manor house is now the focal point for the Gibson’s Grant neighborhood. It is looking for a new owner. The home is currently listed for sale by Keller Williams Select Realtors.

The Nationals will take on the Mets March 31st. The Nationals home opener is April 4th against the Braves.

Eastern Shore Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival

It’s a favorite of beachcombers and artists alike, sea glass. The beautiful frosted glass is really just nature’s version of recycling.  It takes years, but the tumbling through the bottom of the water smoothes and rounds sharp edges turning what was discarded into something beautiful.

The Chesapeake Bay has a rich maritime history and it’s shores you can find plenty of sea glass. The owners of the Ophiuroidea wanted to celebrate the area’s history and the art from the shores. “Since our shop is on the eastern shore of Maryland, we are surrounded by waterways throughout the Chesapeake Bay regions.” explains Kim Hannon “ We wanted to share the history of the area while showcasing the beauty of sea glass.” In 2011, they started the Eastern Shore Sea Glass and Costal Arts Festival.  “We figured it would be a great way to celebrate the love of sea glass, help promote area sea glass artisans and the town of St Michaels. “

More than 25 artisans, some from as far away as Maine, will participate in this year’s festival. Richard LaMotte author of Pure Sea Glass will be sharing his knowledge of the sea glass history and signing books.  But Kim says this festival is a little different from other ones “ We like to keep it fun. “  There will be musical performances through out the day and St Michaels Brewing and Lyon Distilling Company will also be on hand.  The organizers hope you leave the festival having learned a little about sea glass. “Bring a friend and make a day of it, St Michaels is a wonderful town with award winning shops, restaurants and lodging. “

The 3rd Annual Eastern Shore Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival is March 29th from 10 to 4pm. It is held at the Historic Mill on East Marengo Street in St Michaels. Parking can be found at the St Michaels School or municipal parking lot.
